California - PACIFIC RAILROAD MUSEUM in the SAN DIMAS Station PRS operates the Pacific Railroad Museum in the former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe depot in San Dimas, California. California - Portola Railroad Museum The theme of the museum is an operating small railroad locomotive facility typical of the 1940's, 50's and 60's. The museum is a 37 acre Western Pacific diesel shop that was used from 1954 until 1974. The property is leased by Union Pacific to the Feather River Rail Society. The site includes a 220 foot long, 16,000 square feet diesel locomotive shop and has two and a half miles of trackage. The museum has over 30 locomotives and 80 cars. The first locomotive acquired by the museum was Western Pacific 921-D, an EMD F7A. Unlike other museums, visitors to Portola are encouraged to climb up in the cabs of locomotives, to sit in the engineer's seats, and to browse through the many cabooses and passenger cars that are on display. There is aRun-A-Locomotive program, whereanyone can rent and operate a real locomotive on the museum grounds (understrict supervision, of course). Renters have been of all ages, youngchildren (all children, even those in their 90s) are encouraged.
California Science Center At the California Science Center, children and their families discover how science relates to everyday life through over 100 interactive exhibits and an IMAX theater. Permanent exhibit halls include World of Life which demonstrates the basic functions all life forms must perform to survive, and Creative World which looks at the technology used in communications, structures and transportation. Exhibit highlights include the High-Wire Bicycle where visitors can ride across a one-inch cable 43 feet above the floor, and Tess, the 50 foot star of BodyWorks, a multimedia show that teaches how the body stays in balance. IMAX films, in both traditional 2D and 3D format, are shown on a movie screen 7-stories high and tie in to themes found in the Science Center. California - Society for the Preservation of Carter Railroad Resources The Society for the Preservation of Carter Railroad Resources (SPCRR) is a non-profit organization dedicated to acquiring and restoring railroad car constructed by Carter Brothers in Newark, California, around the turn of the century. The Society currently has ten such narrow gauge cars; two completely restored flatcars -- one which operated on the South Pacific Coast -- and one which operated on the Northshore; four boxcars, combine 1010, a horsecar, a home-built ballast car, and ex-SPCRR No. 47. Cars are restored to their original condition using the original techniques. The cars are operated on narrow gauge track constructed by the group at the Ardenwood Historic Farm, a 200-acre working farm in Fremont/Newark. Operating practices follow the South Pacific Coast Railroad as a prototype; motive power is one of the group's two large draft horses.
