South Carolina - Best Friend of Charleston Best Friend was the first and longest line steam locomotive in the US. It currently sets in a Nationally designated railroad district with several train sheds and warehouses that are being adaptively reused. There is a small shop next to it displaying various railroad related books and exhibits. The original train was privately financed by City business men at a time when Charleston and New York were actively vying for shipping and trade.
South Carolina Railroad Museum SCRM is primarily concerned with the preservation and interpretation of railroading in South Carolina, especially short line and industrial railroading. The museum's railroad, formerly the Rockton & Rion Railway, fits both of these categories. Built in the late 1800's to haul the world-famous Winnsboro Blue Granite, the R&R hung on until 1972, using a fleet of six steam locomotives into the late 1960's. All but two of these are still extant, and two are still on the property, albeit in very bad shape and not owned by SCRM
