  • Big Cypress National Preserve
    The 729,000 acre Big Cypress National Preserve was set aside in 1974 to ensure the preservation, conservation, and protection of the natural scenic, floral and faunal, and recreational values of the Big Cypress Watershed. The preserve includes 31 miles of the Florida Trail which can be very wet in the rainy season. The Tree Snail Hammock Nature Trail is a short, self-guided trail located on Loop Road. Two scenic drives through the preserve provide leisurely wildlife viewing. The Loop Road is a 26-mile, single-lane, unimproved road beginning and ending on highway 41. Located in Ochopee, Florida.

  • Biscayne National Park
    Biscayne National Park is known locally as a fantastic place for recreation. It, however, is much more than that — the park protects and preserves a nationally significant marine ecosystem with mangrove shorelines, a shallow bay, undeveloped islands, and living coral reefs. Biscayne National Park is 95 per cent water. To see the park, one must get in a boat. Because of this, visitors who have their own boats have almost unlimited access to the park's resources. Located in Homestead, Florida.

  • Canaveral Natural Seashore
    Part of a barrier island offering 24 milies of undeveloped beach and wetland enviroment encompassing over 57,600 acres. The park offers sanctuary for over 1000 species of plants, 300 species of birds, including 14 threatened or endangered species. Located in Florida.

  • Castillo de San Marcos National Monument
    The Castillo de San Marcos, built 1672-1695, served primarily as an outpost of the Spanish Empire, guarding St. Augustine, the first permanent European settlement in the continental United States, and also protecting the sea route for treasure ships returning to Spain. Located at downtown St. Augustine, Florida on the bayfront.

  • De Soto National Memorial
    The mission of De Soto National Memorial is to commemorate Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, who landed on the southwest Florida coast in 1539. With an army of 600 soldiers, Soto had come to the new world with a license from the King of Spain to explore, colonize and pacify the Indians of the area known as "La Florida". The expedition faced many hardships throughout the four-year, 4000-mile journey. Located in Bradenton, Florida.

  • Dry Tortugas National Park
    Almost 70 miles (112.9 km) west of Key West, Florida lies a cluster of seven islands, composed of coral reefs and sand, called the Dry Tortugas. Along with the surrounding shoals and waters, they make up Dry Tortugas National Park. The area is known for its famous bird and marine life, and its legends of pirates and sunken gold. Ft. Jefferson, the largest of the 19th century American coastal forts is a central feature.

  • Everglades National Park
    Located in Florida, the Everglades National Park is the largest remaining sub-tropical wilderness in the continental United States and has extensive fresh and saltwater areas, open Everglades prairies, and mangrove forests. Abundant wildlife includes rare and colorful birds, and this is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles exist side by side.

  • Fort Caroline National Memorial -Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve
    A quarter mile walk from the Visitor Center along the Old French Trail brings visitors to a life-size exhibit of Fort de la Caroline. While the fort exhibit is not an original historic structure, the exhibit provides visitors with a glimpse of how the French tried to protect their colonists from a harsh new environment among unknown cultures and from the very real threat from a well known European enemy - Spain. In addition to the fort trail, there is a one mile self-guided loop trail (Hammock Trail) with interpretive placards along the way that focus on the natural and cultural history of the site. Located at Jacksonville, Florida.

    Nestled between northeast Florida's lower St. Johns and Nassau Rivers, the 46,000 acre Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve was established in 1988 to protect the natural resources of one of the last unspoiled coastal wetlands on the Atlantic Coast and to preserve historic and prehistoric sites within the area. The estuarine ecosystem within the Preserve includes salt marsh, coastal dunes, hardwood hammock, as well as salt, fresh, and brackish waters, all rich in native vegetation and animal life.
