Multiple Births A multiple birth can start in two ways. In the case of fraternal twins, two eggs (from one or both ovaries) are fertilized, producing twins of the same or different sex--and no more similar than other siblings. Generally, each twin has its own placenta, although the placentas may fuse at some point and appear as one, making the placenta an inaccurate guide as to whether twins of the same sex are fraternal or identical.
